OTTUMWA —
Two new members of the Wapello County Trails Council are making their ideas heard.
Courtney Brown and Emily Anderson proposed a race to happen next fall, the Ottumwa “Run to Fund.”
While Kim Hellige, trails council president and Ottumwa Community School District director of community programs, said “it’s just a concept right now,” she said the council is on board with the idea and is planning the run for next October.
Brown and Anderson are organizing 5K and 10K runs to be raced along portions of the trail system.
“And all of the proceeds will be used to support the trails,” Hellige said, with the funds focused specifically on construction and maintenance.
Hellige said that as part of the council’s recently updated strategic plan, maintenance became one of their highest priorities.
People are beginning to see some cracking in sections paved longer ago, Hellige said, and there are still some other projects in the works right now.
“There’s one more section that’s supposed to be done next spring and then we’ll begin working on the connectors,” she said.
A section of the trail system looping around John Deere Ottumwa Works will be completed this spring, which will complete the 3.2- to 3.4-mile loop.
Another idea, Hellige said, is putting an underpass underneath U.S. Highway 34 in the vicinity of the Dog Park, connecting the trail to the campground, she said.
“There’s no safe way to cross Highway 34,” she said. “There’s not even any sidewalks out there by where the theater is.”
But so far, the council is just in the fundraising phase, since this project would be “a pretty substantial project in comparison to anything we’ve done in the past.”
The trails council will meet at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the Hotel Ottumwa.
