OTTUMWA —
Ask Devon Severson anything about Vermeer Industries’ round baler and she’ll gladly tell you.
After all, she’s researched the topic for more than three months, and during Friday’s Wapello County 4-H Expo, her hard work and expertise shined as she discussed the baler and fielded questions from the audience.
“I’m not too shy,” she said with a modest grin. “I like speaking about this.”
Devon, 11, of rural Chillicothe, was just one of many Wapello County 4-H’ers who have displayed their talents this week at the expo.
Those efforts, say Lisa Whitmore, the county extension office’s youth coordinator, have been the hallmark of a good week.
“I’m very impressed with all the great things our 4-H’ers have done,” she said.
Whitmore said this week’s expo at the Bridge View Center has garnered many positive remarks from visitors, both young and old.
She said they of course like the fact that the expo is held indoors, currently the only indoor expo or fair in the state of Iowa.
More importantly, the expo has shown the talents and hard work of 4-H’ers in Wapello County.
Whitmore said the winning entries — the “best of the best” as picked by the judges — will “fare very well” at next month’s Iowa State Fair.
Visitors to this year’s expo have one more day to explore and watch the activities at Bridge View (see schedule).
Once today’s activities wrap up, Whitmore said organizers will begin working on the 2011 event.
“We’re already keeping a list and taking notes,” she said.
