ELDON —
Every stitch was sewn with love.
Barbara Neill of Eldon has created a quilt to honor those Iowans killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. And its message is symbolic of the kind of care and compassion members of the Patriot Guard Riders who have shown to the families of those who paid the ultimate price.
Neill’s husband, Charlie, is the state captain of the Patriot Guard. He said the quilt is a testament to the soldiers and their families.
“Our main goal is to show our honor and respect and comfort for the families of fallen soldiers,” he said.
The Patriot Guard is a nationwide organization with chapters in all 50 states. They will accompany funeral processions, usually lining the streets with guard members holding flags.
Unfortunately, Neill said, the guard often acts as a shield for the family against some well-known protesters, like members of Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church.
But the Patriot Guard also attends military send-offs and welcome home ceremonies.
Neill said the volunteer group will be busy between now and Aug. 9 as there will be 30 military send-offs in the state of Iowa alone.
“Within the next 3-4 weeks, we’re shipping off 3,000 National Guard troops,” he said.
So where does the quilt come into play?
Today, both Charlie and Barbara will travel to Marshalltown for the “Gathering of the Guard” fundraising event.
The quilt will be auctioned off, along with other items, with proceeds going toward expenses the guard incurs, including the purchase of plaques the guard presents to family members of those soldiers who gave their lives.
The quilt features the name of every Iowa soldier killed in Iraq and Afghanistan up to this point, military flags and photos of Patriot Guard members in service to the families.
“I think she did a heck of a good job,” Neill said. “I think it is very beautiful.”
And while there are plans for those attending this evening’s fundraiser to bid on the quilt, Neill said anybody can put a bid in.
Those wishing to bid can call Neill before 6 p.m. today at (641) 799-2881.
