Board considers bridge needs

Road agreement focuses on sand for Chillicothe bridge

OTTUMWA — An agreement with the City of Chillicothe is one of several items the Wapello County Supervisors will handle when they meet today.

The agreement would be between Chillicothe and Wapello County and the focus is sand for the bridge over the railroad tracks.

“We’ll be hauling sand for the bridge over the rail tracks from now until the weather stops us,” Supervisor Steve Siegel said.

The agreement pertains to repairing Chillicothe’s roads to the condition they were before the work started.

Siegel also noted all the bridge piers are in and crews will lay the deck soon.

“That’s the bridge over the Des Moines River. Next spring we’ll build a second bridge over the tracks so the work won’t have to stop at the tracks,” Siegel said. “It’ll make it safer, too.”

The board has several other items on the agenda, including a canvass of the school board elections held Sept. 13.

Also on the agenda are: transferring funds; accepting a resignation from a Compensation Board member; three tax suspensions, one under Iowa Code Chapter 427.9 and two under 427.8; considering a partial abatement of property taxes at 11640 Bladensburg Road; a contract with McAnich Corporation for three projects; and two personnel requests.

The supervisors will meet at 9:30 a.m. today in the third-floor boardroom/courtroom at the Wapello County Courthouse. The meeting will be open to the public and the board may agree, upon request, to hear public input. If so, comments will be limited to two minutes.
