Three area trials face setbacks, delays

Nicoletto, Grinstead, Pollard looking at felony charges

BLOOMFIELD — A former high school coach convicted of sexual misconduct wants a new trial.

In July, a jury convicted Patrick Ryan Nicoletto, 33, of Bloomfield, with sexual exploitation by a school employee, a class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

At the end of August, Nicoletto’s defense attorney put in a request for a new trial. Last week, the state prosecutor filed a “resistance” to the request.

A judge will decide whether a new trial is warranted.

The arrest happened last October in Bloomfield.

In the years before he was charged, Nicoletto had been an assistant girls’ basketball coach and an assistant baseball coach with Davis County.

The Nicoletto arrest came about a month after another former teacher at Davis County High School was arrested by the Bloomfield Police Department.

• Investigators charged Ryan Grinstead, 31, with having had sex with a female student. Grinstead previously taught math at Davis County High School.

Later, charges were added alleging he had sex with a second student. He’s facing allegations of at least three felony charges.

His trial has been delayed. Last week, a judge moved the trial to 9:30 a.m. Dec. 4.

• In Ottumwa, at least one online document suggested that Bruce Pollard was scheduled to begin a jury trial in Wapello County this week for two counts of alleged armed robbery.

However, Pollard and his public defender were not in the courtroom Tuesday afternoon. The clerk of court said there was no trial scheduled for Pollard in September.

In addition to several robberies, Pollard is accused of murdering an adult theater manager in downtown Ottumwa. That trial is scheduled for Nov. 6.
