EDDYVILLE —
Eddyville residents may see a slight decrease in taxes for the upcoming fiscal year.
Eddyville City Council members will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. March 1 prior to the council’s expected approval of the budget, which features a five-cent tax decrease.
The proposed budget includes a tax asking of $16.40 per $1,000 valuation on regular property taxes, down from the current rate of $16.45 per $1,000 valuation.
If the new budget is approved, employees will see a 2 percent wage increase. The current city clerk will be retiring; the budget includes $27,000 for her replacement and $5,000 for a part-time clerk.
City employees will see a little break on insurance rates with an adjusted rate that should save them about $45 per month and save the city about $5 per month.
“And the taxes are down five cents,” said Councilman Dwight Lobberecht.
In December, the Eddyville Public Library Board of Trustees requested a $5,000 increase in funding from the city due to increases in employee health insurance premiums and costs of materials as well as decreased interest rates on the library’s investments.
However, the proposed budget only reflects a $1,000 increase in funding to the library from the city.
The budget will be reviewed and discussed before approval at the March 1 meeting.
In other business, the council approved a $42,750 contract with Garden and Associates for design of the Walnut Street project, for sidewalks, curb and gutter, milling and overlay and lighting.
The council also continued to discuss nuisance and unsafe buildings in town as well as a possible new ATV city ordinance, which should be similar to the recently approved golf cart ordinance.
