EDDYVILLE —
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont school board members this week approved a lease agreement, which will put a laptop computer in the hands of each junior/senior high school student.
Earlier this summer the board had approved an agreement that would have provided students with a KUNO 3, an android-driven education-designed tablet. However, after further investigation, Superintendent Dean Cook asked the board to go with Dak Tech Computers instead.
The mini laptops offered by Dak Tech feature screens that swivel around to convert into tablets. These units come with a stylus and passive touch screen. Students can take notes with the stylus and then convert those notes into a word document.
Computers also include classroom management tools, allowing teachers to see what students are doing from their own computer. Teachers and students can communicate with each other via the new computers allowing students who may be shy an opportunity to ask questions quietly.
E-B-F will lease the units at an annual cost of $67,515 over four years. At that time the computers will become the property of the district. Cook noted that he hoped to pay off the lease before the four years. Not including interest, the 460 mini laptops cost $254,940.
To go along with the laptops the district also updated smart boards at the high school. The new Promethean ActivBoard 500 Pro is an interactive white board with stylus and multi-touch functionality.
Upgrades will allow teachers to use the boards as touch-screen monitors to interact with student units and display student computer work during class discussion. Twenty-five new boards cost the district $104,975. This amount will be divided over a five-year lease; again Cook hopes to pay this off early.
The board also approved $25,000 work on the roadway behind the junior/senior high school to repair large ruts and potholes. C & J Bulldozing will carry out repairs.
