Supervisors to discuss Bark Park, bridge woes

Committee seeking funds for dog agility equipment

OTTUMWA — The Bark Park and its four-legged users may gain more help when the Wapello County Supervisors meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Wapello County Courthouse.

Supervisor Greg Kenning said Friday that board members had recently listened to Donna Greenley, a Bark Park Committee member, after the meeting. The Bark Park wasn’t on their agenda so they couldn’t make a decision that day.

Greenley said Bark Park supporters are hoping for help in installing agility equipment at the park. The committee has already raised $28,000 but still needs $1,500.

The dog park is on Tuesday’s agenda and Kenning said he’s in favor of helping the group with a possible contribution.

The supervisors will also discuss a contract with Iowa Bridge and Culvert. Kenning said the contract pertains to the Quincy Bridge, which is half owned by the city and the other half by the county.

The Chillicothe Bridge project is on the agenda, too. The board mostly likely will agree to authorize the engineer to proceed with repairs as proposed.

Kenning said the Chillicothe bridge project — the old bridge and the new one — is becoming “more complex.”

“We’re trying to keep the costs down on the repair of the old bridge, which will still be used but only for another 1.5 years,” he said.

Workers were able to repair the bridge by bolting a couple of beams together, “kind of like a splint,” according to Kenning. The original plan was to use a boom truck to haul the beams; but, the crew can’t do that because of the weight restriction on the bridge.

“They’ll have to do this work from barges,” Kenning said.

There is some good news. The company working on the new bridge can’t work in high water, but they do have barges and will let the county use those to complete the repairs.

Kenning said the bridge woes at Chillicothe have been “an inconvenience to people.”

“A lot of people depend on it,” he said. “To stay on pavement, people have to go on Power Plant Road, then over to the Eddyville-Blakesburg Road and that includes three to four miles of gravel.”

The supervisors meeting will be open to the public in the third-floor boardroom/courtroom in the Wapello County Courthouse, 101 W. Fourth St.
