EDDYVILLE —
A sharp-eyed deputy may have solved one case while working another.
At the request of the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, the Ottumwa Police Emergency Response Team burst into the residence of William Cody Landgrebe at 202 S. Third St. in Eddyville.
Wapello County Sheriff Mark Miller said they were carrying out a search after obtaining a warrant from evidence they found during a traffic stop last week.
When the search was executed Wednesday, Landgrebe, 26, was in possession of methamphetamine. He was charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 5 grams of methamphetamine, a Class B felony, and drug tax stamp violation, a Class D felony.
Hector Garcia, 22, was also at the residence. He was charged with felon in possession of firearm and possession of a controlled substance as a result of the search warrant. He was also arrested on two outstanding arrest warrants.
While searching for narcotics, a Wapello County Sheriff’s deputy noticed other items that reminded him of a case he and Miller heard about during a late summer burglary investigation in Eddyville.
A second search warrant was obtained to seize that property. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are expected.
“It was really the attentive nature of one of the investigating deputies,” said Miller. “And he has a good memory for detail.”
The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office and the ERT were assisted in the investigation by the Southeast Iowa Intra-Agency Drug Task Force, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
Garcia is being held in the Wapello County Jail on $13,000 bond, and Landgrebe is being held on a $210,000 bond. Both were still in jail as of Thursday afternoon.
