OTTUMWA —
Motorists are advised that the Eisenhower Pedestrian Bridge over Iowa Highway 149 near Eisenhower Elementary School will be removed by crane this week.
City engineer Dan Sturm said at Monday’s City Council work session that the entirety of the Eisenhower Pedestrian Bridge will be swung to the east side of the highway, which will be closed between midnight and 5 a.m. Friday.
The removal will close the highway just south of the intersection of the highway and Rochester Road. With favorable conditions the highway will be re-opened to traffic by 5 a.m. Friday. Drivers will have to detour around the work zone.
“Traffic will be opened up while crews work on the bridge, but will be closed again when they swing it back over with two cranes to set it,” Sturm said.
Sturm said the city expects the entire project to be done mid- to late September.
An escort vehicle directing a semitruck hauling a wide-load turbine in April 2011 led the semi down the highway. The semi load was too wide to make it under the bridge, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
