“Savor the Flavor” of local foods in the area by touring an open house-style food event sponsored by Hometown Harvest Southeast Iowa.
Open from 12-6 p.m. Sept. 9, a “farm crawl” will take local food enthusiasts on a tour of seven area farms located throughout Jefferson, Keokuk and Washington counties. The event is free and open to the public.
Visit one farm or visit them all. Maps and detailed farm crawl information will be available at each host farm.
Jan Swinton is the local food coordinator for Hometown Harvest, which serves a 12-county area in southeast Iowa. She said that the farm crawl is a fun event that the entire family can enjoy.
“You can get out and look at the farms, see what the goats are like and taste the cheese made from goat’s milk. Then sense the size of the gardens and see the watermelons. It’s a lot of fun and a very hands-on event,” she said.
Each farm will have its own events, tastings and fresh products available for purchase. One farm will have samples of goat cheese, one will feature fresh melons and another gives local wine tastings.
There will be discussions of pawpaw fruit, aronia and the grilling of fall root vegetables. One farm even has a petting zoo, and another will celebrate with Bluegrass music.
A food festival will be set up in the Sigourney library parking lot all afternoon. Julie Stutzman will be baking pizzas in a stone wall brick oven using locally grown herbs and locally grown whole wheat flour. Other area growers will bring juiced watermelon and fresh mint tea, fruit pies and ice cream, fresh-squeezed lemonade and berry juices, locally grown jellies, jams and preserves and potted herbs.
“If you make it your first stop, you can have lunch. If you make it your last stop, you can have supper. If you had an early lunch, stop in the middle of the afternoon and still have a meal,” Swinton suggested.
A tour bus will also be available for the entire farm crawl. The bus will leave from the Fairfield Hy-Vee and make 20-minute stops at each of the seven farms. Cost for the bus ride is $12.
The farm crawl event is sponsored by Hometown Harvest, Pathfinders RD&C and the Fairfield Convention and Visitors Bureau.
