Deer season wraps up
Total of 71 deer harvested
OTTUMWA — The city of Ottumwa’s fifth deer season for bow hunters, which began on Sept. 12, 2009, concluded on Jan. 31.
During the season, 48 hunters registered with the police department to participate in the program. Sixty does and 11 bucks for a total of 71 deer were harvested during the four-month season.
One of the largest antlered deer harvested scored 201 inches and was taken by Joe Clawson of Ottumwa on Christmas Eve near East Rochester Avenue. Last year, 44 hunters registered with 78 deer harvested. Five hunters qualified for buck tags for next year’s season.
The deer hunting program was started in the fall of 2005 as a means to reduce the deer population in Ottumwa. Since then, a total of 498 deer have been harvested from within the city limits through the program.
The start of the city’s 2010-11 deer season for bow hunters will be announced in the summer.
