Sleepy driver causes Sunday crash
OTTUMWA — Authorities say a sleepy driver on cruise control caused a Sunday afternoon crash in Wapello County.
The Iowa State Patrol report on the crash says it took place at 2:30 p.m. at the 200 mile marker on Highway 34. Paul Hughes, 84, of Mission, Kan., was driving westbound. Hughes had his car on cruise control and was following a car driven by Harry Davis, 67, of Drakesville.
Davis slowed for a dog that had wandered onto the highway. Hughes didn’t see that happen.
“The driver ... admitted that he ‘dozed off,”’ the report says.
The front right corner of Hughes’ car struck the left rear corner of Davis’ car. Both vehicles pulled onto the north shoulder and out of traffic. Neither man was injured in the collision.
