Party for art: Organizers change Walk on Art Street kickoff event

OTTUMWA — Main Street Ottumwa is tossing a couple of margaritas into the mix.

Margaritas for Main Street, formerly known as the Walk on Art Street Patron’s Party, will be held two nights before Walk on Art Street.

“It’s still the kickoff for the art walk, we just decided to do it a little bit different,” said Cindy Woodbury, Main Street Ottumwa’s executive director. “We wanted to include more people in it. There were a couple of folks who felt like, ‘Well, we’re not really patrons of the arts, we don’t know what that means,’ so we just decided to have a party.”

Last year’s patron’s party was held the night before the art walk at the KMGO building downtown. This year’s will be held two nights before at Las Palmas, which can hold 300 people.

The ticketed event, one of the few MSO does, is $30 per person or $100 for a ticket package, which includes four event tickets and four margarita drink tickets.

“Sometimes when you’re doing events, people love the continuity that happens over and over, but when you add something new and change it up a little bit, it makes it more fun,” Woodbury said.

The night will feature a live auction with original artwork, gifts and prizes.

They include a two-night stay and two rounds of golf at Honey Creek Resort, a backyard hot tub party with drinks for six people, a brunch for 12 by Chef Charlie Schiller, belly dance lessons for six by Roxanne Cagwin and more.

Local artists will be contributing work, including Woodbury, who has a master’s degree in art.

As for Walk on Art Street itself, Woodbury is trying to expand the five-year-old event to be more inclusive and reach a broader audience, with children’s activities, an entertainment area, food vendors and more.

“Even if it’s not a piece of art you’re looking for, it’s becoming a community event,” Woodbury said. “We’re trying to make sure it’s a fun day for families.”

Last year, more than 1,000 people came downtown for the art walk, even with a small storm near the end.

“It’s also a fundraiser for Main Street,” Woodbury said, since MSO is completely publicly funded.

“Everything we do, our entire budget, including my salary, events and projects, is under $90,000 a year,” Woodbury said. “This helps us raise a little bit of money that goes toward our bottom line.”

There are still some artist’s spots open for the art walk, as the juried show has not reached its maximum. Artists interested in participating can call the MSO office.

Walk on Art Street will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 1 on Third Street next to Central Park.
