KEOSAUQUA —
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation says a Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a man near Cantril last week was justified in his actions.
Monday’s report said Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Tharp’s actions “were justified and performed within the scope of his employment as a deputy sheriff and were intended as a defensive measure to protect himself and others from the actions of Robert Michael Dooley.”
On Oct. 16, Tharp and fellow Deputy Brad Hudson responded to a report of an armed man making obscene gestures to drivers along Highway 2 near Cantril.
When they arrived, they observed Dooley along the road, and when they tried to approach him, he aimed what looked to be a rifle at the officers. Tharp then fired a single shot, killing Dooley instantly.
The weapon was later determined to be a air rifle, manufactured to look like a vintage Winchester rifle.
