833rd Engineer Company heading to Afghanistan

Community sendoff set for Jan. 28 at IHCC

OTTUMWA — The 833rd Engineer Company is heading back overseas — this time to Afghanistan.

The Jan. 28 callup will involve about 100 soldiers.

The 833rd, according to a release from the Iowa National Guard, increases the combat effectiveness of allied soldiers by removing obstacles, reducing minefields and other explosives, constructing protective positions and, when required, performing infantry missions.

The 833rd was previously deployed twice to Iraq. The first deployment for Operation: Iraqi Freedom was 2004-05.

Statistics from their second mission, from June 2007 to June 2008, showed that the unit conducted 495 combat patrols and cleared a total of 40,000 miles of roadway for coalition forces.

After reporting to Fort Bliss, Texas, for additional training, the unit will ship out to Central Command at the theater of operations.

A community sendoff for the Ottumwa-based unit is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Hellyer Student Life Center at Indian Hills Community College.
