OTTUMWA — Ottumwa police are warning of yet another phone scam, this one centered on Medicare and Medicaid.
The scammer calls a potential victim claiming he wants to set up an appointment to come to the victim’s home and discuss changes to the Medicare or Medicaid coverage. The apparent goal is to gain access to the home in order to steal personal information or property.
Police say officials with Medicare and Medicaid do not make home visits to discuss a client’s coverage, and advise people to hang up on any caller seeking such an appointment.
It is also inadvisable to ever give out information like bank account numbers, social security numbers or similar information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
