Monroe County Fair opens next week with new building

ALBIA — Before the Monroe County Fair opens Thursday, organizers are already pleased.

Why? The fair now has a new hog building that’s been planned for two years, according to Dean Bettis, a member of the Monroe County Fair Board.

“We tore down the old one after the fair was over last year,” Bettis said.

The new hog building is 112 feet by 36 feet and has 16-foot doors overhead. The building also has new fluorescent lights, new pens and new concrete, he added.

Bettis said the fair board borrowed funds and received donations from county residents. At 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 29, the fair board will cut the ribbon on the new hog building.

“The old buildings were constructed in the 1950s and the poles were rotting,” he said. “The new hog building is the big thing we’re celebrating. We want to keep the fair going.”

Bettis said the fair will start with weighing in all the animals on Thursday. Then, on Friday, there will be a horse show; next Saturday, a beef show; next Sunday, hogs and sheep; and on Monday, July 30, a dog show.

“On Monday evening, we’ll have an appreciation 4-H supper,” Bettis said. “After that, we’ll have a livestock sale.

He also noted some of the entertainment coming to the Monroe County Fair. On Friday night, the fair will have “Make It or Break It,” an event for four-wheel drive trucks that can handle the trails around Lovilia, which is northwest of Albia.

At 7 p.m. Friday, the fair board will crown a king and queen.

“We’ll have good breakfasts scheduled for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday,” Bettis said. “[The meals] will be sponsored by different merchants.”

Next Saturday’s headliner will be the annual Demolition Derby. Bettis said Steve Terlow puts on the show and “a good crowd always shows up for him.”
