OTTUMWA —
Where would you hear about Chief Wapello, a communications tower and a utility building at the Wapello County Home?
Only at the Wapello County Supervisors meeting.
At one end of the courtroom, the board members this week conducted a public hearing on plans and specifications for the communications tower.
Wapello County Supervisor Jerry Parker said Wednesday there were no objections to anything, and the board approved the matter.
“Also, the board directed the county auditor to advertise for bids,” Parker said. “She is to get with RACOM and come up with a time frame for advertising the bids.”
Other auxiliary things are happening, too. He said the Wapello County Road Department is hiring a contractor to do the soil borings in the area. That means county officials will have the information available for the bidders for the tower.
The bidders will know what the soil looks like and will also know what problems they may find, Parker explained.
The communications tower is on the site of the former Washington Junior High School, which was at the top of the Fourth Street hill beyond Ottumwa Fire Department.
“Wapello County bought a parcel of land there, and that’s where there are three towers,” Parker added.
The supervisors also discussed a building at the Wapello County Home. A vicious spring storm punched the county’s utility building, and the board approved rebuilding the structure.
“We’re still finding parts of that building in the cornfields,” Parker said. “Some of those pieces were a quarter mile into the field.”
For being a statue, Chief Wapello gets around a lot. The chief will be in Blakesburg’s Corn Carnival Parade, which will start at 11 a.m. Saturday.
After the parade, Chief Wapello will be on display Saturday in the old gym.
On Friday, the chief will be visiting Cardinal Elementary School from noon to 3 p.m.
