WEST DES MOINES —
On Oct. 13, kidney patients, organ donors, transplant recipients, family, friends and co-workers from the Ottumwa community gathered in the Jimmy Jones Shelter at Ottumwa Park to help raise awareness for the millions of people nationwide affected by kidney disease.
More than 50 people participated in the first-ever Southeast Iowa Kidney Walk and raised $6,143, surpassing the goal of $5,000. People have already begun pledging to sponsor and put together teams for the Kidney Walk next year, set for Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped make the very first year a success. To know that we have so many wonderful people in our community who came out to support those battling kidney disease was just amazing.
Funds raised at the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walks will go directly to vital programs that help fight kidney disease through prevention, advocacy and education. The mission of the NKF is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.
