Proud to be from state with same-sex marriage

I have always been proud to tell people that I am from Iowa. Since the Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling in April, allowing all couples, regardless of gender, the right to marry, it makes me even happier to be an Iowan.

When I used to tell people that I am from Iowa, they used to respond, “Isn’t that the state known for all of the corn and farmland?” But now, when I tell people that I am from Iowa, the response is so much different. I get, “Wow! Same-sex marriage is legal there. You’re so lucky to live in a state where all couples have the right to marry.”

Today, Iowa is facing many challenges. With steadily rising unemployment rates and Iowa’s own budget crisis looming overhead, it is shocking to me that some are attempting to alter our state Constitution to reverse the recent decision regarding marriage equality.

It will be a devastating force of division within our local communities, putting neighbor against neighbor instead of uniting us.

I think that most Iowans would agree that it’s most important for our state to stay afloat and that the unemployment rate will decrease; not worry about who is allowed to marry whom.

I urge our leaders and the community not to dwell on a fight that was settled in our Supreme Court last April, but to focus their efforts on issues that will strengthen our communities and state.
