Letters to the Editor
Thanks for helping with Veterans Day event
Thank you, Jerry Van Dalen.
For the first time in more years than anyone could remember, for sure, Blakesburg community veterans were honored with a ceremony at the park.
We thank you, Jerry, for the thought and for all the effort in organizing the event. Thanks also to the Eddyville-Blakesburg sixth-grade band, and other student helpers, their teachers, Mayor Randy Burton, Chaplain Lt. Eric Reyman, guest speaker, Command Chief Warrant Officer John Wynn and the Blakesburg Coffee Club.
And thanks to those who have helped Jerry with another project, “placing of the stones,” which were recognized as part of the Veterans Day event.
The purpose of the stones, which are placed under the wheels and the tongue of the cannon, is to support and therefore possibly extend the life of the World War I cannon which has been in the park since 1935 or 1936. Veterans who helped bring the cannon to Blakesburg were Dr. Ralph Selman, Gail Gilland, Carl Huber, T. G. Leach, F. W. Perry and others.
The event ended on a warm note, with coffee and cake provided by the Blakesburg Coffee Club at the Community Building; and, of course, lots of visiting.
Patty Rowland
and others,
Blakesburg
