I recently read the letter to the editor regarding Race for the Cure. Yes, this event will be here soon and training for it makes it much easier. I look forward to that Saturday each year. It began for us about 14 years ago. Grandma would take the three kids and this was her special time, they would attend the race and walk together through the long route around the park, and then she would take them out for breakfast. After grandma passed away seven years ago, I began going with them. I remember the first year I went with the kids, my son was 12 and he ran the whole event. He had always walked it before with grandma. As I watched him across the park and saw he was stiil running I knew somehow that was for grandma and the tradition she had started many years before.
When people pass on we all deal with memories in different ways. Relay For Life is also a way to celebrate life and also to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. I feel as a community we need to support each other in Race for the Cure and Relay For Life. We shouldn’t look at each other as competition, but as coming together to support one another. At the end of the day our main objective is to help cancer patients and their families. To raise awareness, celebrate life and remember those we have lost. So please also mark your calendars for Sept. 21 from 2-5 p.m. This year’s event will be held at the Bridge View Center, and we hope to see a record-breaking crowd.
