My name is Tony Miller, and I am a Deputy Chief with the Ottumwa Fire Department. My letter is in reference with the use, or lack of use, of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
We have had some situations this winter that could have turned tragic. The Ottumwa Fire Department has responded to emergency calls this winter where there have been no smoke detectors or the battery has been taken out when it started chirping.
When a smoke detector starts chirping, that usually means that the battery needs replaced. A working smoke detector is the first line of defense in a fire emergency. You can purchase a smoke detector or a carbon monoxide detector at any local hardware or discount store.
The Ottumwa Fire Department will provide smoke detectors at no cost to the homeowner under certain income guidelines. We will also come to your home to install smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors at no cost to the home owner.
Carbon monoxide detectors are also very important to have in your home. They could be the first line of defense if you would have a C/O leak. Every year, there are fatalities due to carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have a C/O detector and it alarms, please call the fire department, and we will come out and investigate, with our monitors.
If you have any questions or concerns about smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, please call the Ottumwa Fire Department at (641) 683-0666.
Thank you and be safe.
Tony Miller
