Iowa 49th in receiving Medicare compensation

FAIRFIELD — I read with great interest about the possible cut(s) proposed to health centers and hospitals. Through all of this conversation about this matter, I have never heard or read anywhere as to why Iowa is 49th out of 50 states to receive compensation from Medicare.

It certainly pertains to history!

In 1965, when the final vote was in procedure to either vote it up or down, in which it was voted up or we wouldn’t have it, Iowa had two senators and seven congressmen. With one Democratic senator and one Republican senator representing Iowa, this vote, however, turned out to be a wash. The Democrat submitted a “yes” vote and the Republican a “no” vote.

In the Congress at this time in history, Iowa has seven congressmen, one Democrat and six Republicans. The vote here was six “no” votes and one “yes” vote, leaving a final vote from both chambers, seven “no” votes and two “yes” votes. This voting procedures placed Iowa where it still is today, 49th. Wyoming is 50th. However, that’s another story. I was surprised when Sens. Grassley and Harkin were looking into this a few years ago that this question didn’t come up.
