OTTUMWA —
Legendary baritone-bass singer Simon Estes will be the keynote speaker and several community organizations will perform works honoring the Martin Luther King Jr. legacy during Ottumwa’s MLK Celebration at 7 p.m. Monday at the Ottumwa High School Auditorium. Admission is free.
The MLK Celebration will feature local organizations including the OHS JROTC Color Guard, Evans Honor Choir, Ottumwa Community Children’s Players, OHS Meistersingers, Indian Hills Community College Concert Choir, Simply Grace Trio, OHS Broadway Bulldogs and a combined choir from several local churches.
King was a prominent religious leader, activist and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950-1960s. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and delivered the famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the mall in Washington, D.C., in 1963. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1968 for his work on combating racial inequality using non-violence. King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., where he was supporting the city’s Sanitation Workers Strike in 1968.
Ottumwa’s MLK Celebration is co-sponsored by the Ottumwa school district and IHCC.
