Country music fans won’t want to miss the Fifth annual Bob Reed Country Music Showcase at 2 p.m. Sunday at King Theatre in Albia.
The program of old-time favorite country music songs will be performed by many who performed at the first Bob Reed Country Music Showcase. Popular local talent includes the Bob Reed Band with Cindy Rhodes, Paul Hatfield, Mike Freshwater, Richard Coop and Eric Chambers; vocalists Tom Williamson, Joe Flahive, Beth Hunter, Reverta Stewart, several of Reed’s grandsons, great-grandchildren and others.
As a tribute to Reed and his many years of work in and for the community, Cindy Rhodes and Dave Paxton organized the first show in February 2009 featuring local talent. At that time, Reed was battling cancer.
“He thoroughly enjoyed the show and was humbled by the outpouring of community support,” said his daughter, Robin Haselhuhn.
Reed passed away nine days later. The show has become an annual event in tribute to Reed’s example of untiring efforts to help those who needed a hand up and to help improve his community.
Admission is a freewill donation. All donations will be divided with half going toward continuing renovation of King Theatre in Albia. The other half of donation monies will go to the Bob Reed Memorial Scholarship fund, which each year awards a $500 scholarship to an Albia FFA member who demonstrates leadership, hard work and a love of community. A second $500 scholarship is awarded to an Albia Community High School senior who will be attending a two-year trade program, is of good character and has demonstrated love of community through volunteerism.
