Winners named in SEISO Young Artist Competition
MT. PLEASANT — Three winners have been named in Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra’s Marilyn Minford McCoid Young Artist Competition.
SEISO Conductor Robert McConnell, following the competition Dec. 5 in Mount Pleasant, announced first, second and third place winners.
Pianist, Taylor Fulton won first place. An Iowa Mennonite High School junior and the daughter of Rick and Annette Fulton of Crawfordsville, she performed the 3rd movement from Mozart’s “Concerto in C Major No. 13, K.415.“
Second place was violinist, Chris Hagedorn, who performed the first movement of Haydn’s “Concerto in G Major.” The high school senior is the son of Terry and Victoria Hagedorn of Kalona.
Both will receive a scholarship award provided by the Mort and Virginia Schmucker Memorial Trust.
Third place went to hornist, Lindsey Ruberg, a senior at Burlington High School. She is the daughter of James and Rebecca Ruberg.
Also competing were Nathan Payne (pianist) of Ottumwa; Tiffany Hildebrand (flutist) of Montrose and Shannon Cochran (soprano) of Fairfield.
McConnell congratulated all of the contestants, parents and teachers on their high level of achievement. “It was inspiring to hear the result of the many years of hard work that the students have put into developing their talent. All six contestants performed well enough to perform as a soloist with the orchestra.” he said.
The Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra’s Marilyn Minford McCoid Young Artist Competition is an annual event designed to encourage and recognize exceptional young music talent in Southeast Iowa. The competition is part of the orchestra’s educational component and is supported through an endowment gift from the family of Marilyn Minford McCoid.
