Five By Design’s Club Swing is coming to Ottumwa for a 7:30 p.m. performance on Feb. 16 appearance at Bridge View Center, 102 Church St.
Five By Design has been producing musical theatre retrospectives for symphony orchestras and performing art centers since 1990. The Minneapolis-based vocal quintet has appeared with more than 200 symphony orchestras and countless performing art centers throughout the United States and Canada and recently came off a seven-city holiday tour with the Boston Pops.
The production takes place in the present following its 1937 opening to its closure in 1955. The show opens with a news report that the club will face the wrecking ball as its former mixologist, Joe Sullivan, visits the empty venue one last time.
Backed by its big band, Five By Design recalls the music of Cole Porter’s “Begin The Beguine,” Spike Jones’ “Cocktails For Two” and Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa.” From its frenetic paced opening of Benny Goodman’s “Bugle Call Rag” to the blockbuster “Sing, Sing,” Club Swing celebrates the songs, events and personalities that were popular during the swing era.
