Carmina Burana on spring concert program April 27

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra, in conjunction with the Grinnell College Singers and Grinnell Oratorio Society, is presenting Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” at its spring concert at the Bridge View Center on April 27.

The piece is based on the Carmina Burana poems discovered in a monastery in the early 1800s. These poems, mostly written in Latin with a couple in early German, celebrate love.

The 25 numbers of this work set the poems for orchestra augmented by an adult chorus, children’s chorus and soloists. Two of the numbers are dance music.

This energetic work needs much choral power in both the adult and children’s chorus. Area residents wishing to join in singing this work are invited to join rehearsals held each Sunday at 6:30 p.m. now through the April performance.

Additionally, young singers in grades three through eight may also sing in the children’s chorus. These rehearsals are initially being held at Seton School each Monday at 7:30 a.m. Additional sites and times for children will also be held the need arises.

All singers are also asked to commit to three rehearsals with the orchestra on April 25-27.

Music and general information may be obtained from Tom Shadonix by texting 515-480-6039 or by email at musicmaster@q.com.
