At its upcoming board meeting, the Indian Hills Community College trustees will certify the results of the special election held in December. It should be an especially gratifying motion, since ballot language can sometimes be a bit confusing.
“I think the concern [we] had was the wording on the ballot, to make sure that the public understood this was not a new tax, it was an extension of an existing levy,” said IHCC President Jim Lindenmayer. “We were just trying to [ensure that wording] was clear. I wasn’t worried about the public understanding the issue [itself].”
The measure passed overall for the college’s 10-county region, including a vote total of 188-45 in Wapello County. The board’s acceptance on Monday will make the continuation of the Six-Cent Equipment Levy official.
“It would be about $6 on a $100,000 house,” Lindenmayer said.
He explained that Indian Hills uses the money for instructional equipment, like overhead projectors in classrooms or a robotic arm at an advanced technology lab.
“It raises about $380,000 a year,” Lindenmayer said.
The tax applies to all property owners in the region covered by the college. The levy has been in effect for 20 years. It’ll now get an extra 10 years of life.
Other agenda items include a security update and a briefing on IowaWorks.
The board meets at 4:30 p.m. Monday in their conference room on the Main Campus of Indian Hills.
