Wapello County 4-H royalty crowned

OTTUMWA — If you’re going to the 4-H Expo this week, you’ll probably get to see Rachel Hinebaugh.

Hinebaugh, the daughter of Steve and Brenda Hinebaugh, was crowned 4-H Expo Queen at the royalty pageant Monday at Bridge View Center. She and the rest of the royal court will play host to fellow 4-H members and parents at dog shows, livestock judging and other events.

Hinebaugh will also represent her county at this year’s Iowa State Fair — she was named Wapello County Fair Queen earlier this summer.

“To get to represent our county to such an extent really means a lot. It’s a great honor,” she said after receiving her crown, sash, trophy and flowers.

Her goal, she said, is to do a good job meeting her responsibilities here and in Des Moines.

In addition to welcoming participants and sponsors at various 4-H competitions and other events this week, she still has her responsibilities to the members of her specific 4-H club.

“I generally help them with their livestock, and I’m showing my dog. We’ve still got all the work to do on the farm, but with this, we get to show off our girlie side.”

And for those young ladies who don’t believe they have a “girlie” side with dresses and heels, she warned, don’t be so quick to dismiss the pageant opportunity. So what would she tell her friends who prefer blue jeans?

“I am that type of girl. But the experience of going through the interviews and all these new people you get to meet, the other [participants] you get to hang out with ... it’s a great experience, and that has nothing to do with winning or not winning.”

She said experiences like these are some of the ways a young person can become more confident getting up in front of a group

“All those people,” Rachel said, pointing out toward the Bridge View theater seats, “watching every move I make? I still get nervous, but this experience helps you, which [is valuable] because everything you do is going to be in front of people.”

While winning the 4-H Expo queen contest wasn’t the most important goal, she said, it does help make 2012 a special 4-H year. She’ll be graduating from high school, so she’ll no longer be able to participate in these activities.

“It’s my last expo,” she said, “and I get to go out with a bang!”

The 4-H Expo King for 2012 is Steven Donohue, son of Ron and Cindy Donohue. The 4-H Expo Princess is Brook Hankins, daughter of Danny and Loretta Hankins. The 4-H Expo Prince is Austin Angle, son of Aaron and Allison Angle.
