OTTUMWA —
The Wapello County Board of Supervisors is moving ahead with its work on the county budget, which includes county roads.
The board conducted a public hearing on resurfacing the Eldon-Floris Road, Competine Road and some of Bluegrass Road.
“We need to complete our Rock Bluff elevation and paving project and a few other smaller things,” Supervisor Steve Siegel said after the meeting.
The supervisors approved a hearing on the county budget at 5:30 p.m. March 12 in the third-floor courtroom in the county courthouse.
Meanwhile, the supervisors noted that two federal programs have been cut, and the board said they are encouraging federal leaders to find funds to keep the programs moving forward.
Supervisor Greg Kenning said federal support for the Ottumwa Job Corps site is dwindling and has been cut back by 40 percent thanks to an enrollment freeze by the U.S. Department of Labor.
“Job Corps is an organization that helps kids who might not make it through regular education,” he said.
Supervisor Jerry Parker said Job Corps is a federal program that makes money and pays taxes locally.
There’s also the potential for cutting back on other programs, particularly the women’s crisis centers.
The Crisis Center would be a federal budget cut in a state region, according to Siegel. The federal cut could close half the shelters in Iowa because each region has two shelters.
Ottumwa has the Crisis Center, and its partner shelter is Crisis Intervention Services in Oskaloosa. The Crisis Center handles shelter services, and CIS provides sexual assault services and shelter.
