OTTUMWA —
Golfers will tee off Saturday morning to fund a scholarship for two area high school seniors with dreams of going into law enforcement.
The Wapello County Sheriff Reserves, a nonprofit organization, will hold its first Scholarship Golf Tournament Saturday to raise money for the Reserves High School Scholarship fund.
“We decided back in February that we wanted to start doing a scholarship to give out to kids going into college that want to get into a career in law enforcement or corrections,” said Jeremy Weller, Wapello County jail administrator.
Two scholarships will be awarded to two Wapello County high school seniors in April, one to a male and one to a female.
“We set aside some money for that fund already, but it was decided we should do something to raise some money for it to keep it going, so it’s self-sustaining,” Weller said.
This spring, they decided on the golf tournament.
“And after Lisa Caldwell [a sheriff reserve officer] was murdered in late May, we made the decision at our June meeting that the female scholarship given out each year will be called the Lisa Caldwell Memorial Scholarship,” Weller said. “It will bear her name in memory of her.”
The reserves are looking at $500 per scholarship right now, though Weller said the ultimate goal is to someday be able to give out two scholarships to the three high schools in the county: Cardinal, Ottumwa and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont school districts.
Teams can still sign up to play in the four-person best ball tournament, though Weller said there are only three team spots left.
The reserves have received a lot of support and sponsorship from the community, including a trip to Las Vegas sponsored by Elliott Oil. Weller said if any businesses would still like to donate something for the silent auction, it’s not too late.
