OTTUMWA —
The Wapello County Supervisors have approved a bid for the proposed Wapello County communications tower.
During their meeting Tuesday evening, board members approved a low bid of $297,794 from Sabre, the company that worked on the tower and related structures, such as various small shelters to cover equipment.
“The county 9-1-1 Board signed off on the letter of acceptance and awarded the bid to Sabre,” Supervisor Jerry Parker said. “Now the crew can work on the tower and get the footings done.”
And the emergency board also directed County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon to advertise for bids, Parker said. “She is to get with RACOM and come up with a time frame for advertising the bids.”
Parker also noted the $297,794 included the cost of generator equipment and doing the soil borings. The tower’s building and a generator will bring the amount up to about $500,000 before the work is done.
“[The tower] will take care of 18 devices,” Parker said, “and that should take care of the tower for about 50 years.”
Some of the 20 items listed on the tower’s pricing summary included required permits and fees, $1,944; site excavation; tower design and materials, $56,096; PE stamped tower and foundation design, $1,000; tower and anchor bolt freight, $1,763; and foundation installation, $43,104.
The communications tower is on the site of the former Washington Junior High School, which was at the top of the Fourth Street hill beyond Ottumwa Fire Department.
“Wapello County bought a parcel of land there, and that’s where there are three towers,” Parker added.
