Dangerous cold heads for Iowa

OTTUMWA — This morning's snow will give way to dangerously cold weather in the days ahead.

Southeast Iowa got a considerable amount of snow from this storm, with Pella and Knoxville among the hardest-hit locations in Iowa. But the risk will quickly become subzero temperatures in the coming hours.

The low temperature tonight is expected to be only 7 degrees, with wind chills as low as -5. Thursday's high is forecast at 14.

The coldest air arrives Thursday night, when forecasters are predicting lows of -4. That's the actual temperature. Wind chills are expected to reach -20.

Those are dangerously cold levels. Frostbite can set in within a half hour and hypothermia is a very real risk. And it could be worse if the wind picks up.

Temperatures are expected to rebound to near freezing on Saturday, then into the upper 30s on Sunday and Monday.
