OSKALOOSA —
Experts say corn and soybean conditions fell again in the past week, despite additional rainfall.
The past two weeks have seen widespread, significant rains in Iowa. But the amounts have not been enough to make a major difference and they come much too late for many fields.
The National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS) said Iowa farmers who were out tending corn crops were either spraying it or chopping it. Many farmers are attempting to salvage some value in the crop by turning it into fodder. Forty-nine percent of Iowa corn rated as poor or very poor, with another 35 percent considered fair.
Soybeans are in better shape. That crop saw 39 percent rate as fair and another 23 percent rate as good.
State Climatologist Harry Hillaker said the widespread rain came after the region endured another very hot week. Temperatures are down following a Saturday cold front, though. In all, 13 of the past 14 weeks have seen above average temperatures.
Statewide, Iowa averaged 0.62 inches of rain last week. The normal is 0.96 inches.
"This was the twelfth week of the past thirteen with less than normal rainfall," Hillaker wrote.
