Midnight Express wants to help bring the community together with a dance at the Urban Park this Saturday. They’d also like to help donate to United Way of Mahaska County along the way.
Beginning at 7 p.m. this coming Saturday, Midnight Express will host a dance at the Urban Park. The event will include prize drawings and people are encouraged to skate, bike, roller blade and play basketball during the dance. Kevin Dillon of Midnight Express said a complete DJ setup, including karaoke capability, will be at the Urban Park Saturday night.
Dillon said one of the motivating factors when organizing the dance was that he saw a need for an all-ages event in Oskaloosa.
The event is open to the public of any age and no admission will be charged.
“We want to see everybody come together as a community,” said Dillon, who stressed that the dance is a non-profit endeavor.
Free-will donations, which will go to United Way of Mahaska County, will be accepted. Dillon said donations will go toward outerwear for children in the area. This includes snow boots, snow pants, coats, jackets and other winter essentials.
People can also donate gently used children’s outer ware at the event.
“I grew up with just making ends meet,” explained Dillon. “You might have had to go to school with a torn shirt one day, you might have had to go to school with holey jeans the next day. But, that was the best you had.
“If I can see a smile on a child’s face, that’s the biggest thing of it,” Dillon said.
Brianne Fitzgerald, executive director for United Way of Mahaska County, said United Way of Mahaska County has coordinated a winter coat drive for a number of years. She said that this year United Way of Mahaska County will focus this drive on children’s winter clothing.
Fitzgerald said those with Midnight Express have a passion for helping children. She encouraged area residents to attend the dance, saying it’s a family friendly event.
