An Appanoose County man received probation on theft and burglary charges. The Missouri woman charged with him still faces arraignment.
Rodney Eugene Long, 37, of Centerville, was sentenced Aug. 3. His cohort, Andrea Lynn Hendee, 32, of Unionville, Mo., has an arraignment Aug. 31 in Appanoose County on the charges of fourth degree theft, a serious misdemeanor, and two counts of third degree burglary, Class D felonies.
What did they do?
Based on a press release issued June 21 by the Centerville Police Department, Long and Hendee were arrested and charged with multiple criminal violations on Wednesday, June 20 following an investigation started by Centerville police into the reported burglary and theft of personal property from two local motels. During the investigation it was determined that Long and Hendee unlawfully entered at least two vehicles and took possession of personal property with a value of approximately $800.
While at the Appanoose County Jail, Long began complaining of unknown injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville to be examined in the emergency room.
At approximately 2:16 p.m., while in the emergency room, Long went into a restroom and was able to escape from custody, running south from the hospital. Officers began chasing Long, but lost sight of him when he ran into a wooded area near Bella Vista Drive. At approximately 4:45 p.m. a person matching Long's description was seen walking in the 22000 block of Rock Valley Road and law enforcement officers immediately took him into custody.
Agencies assisting the Centerville Police Department with the search for Long included the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office, Centerville Fire Department, Mercy Medical Center Ambulance, Wayne County Sheriff's Office and K-9, Iowa DNE, Iowa DNR and the DEA.
After entering a voluntary, negotiated guilty plea, Long was sentenced on Aug. 3 by Judge Kirk A. Daily to five years in state prison, all suspended, five years probation with the Department of Correctional Services, 180 days in a residential facility, fine and given credit for any time served for the charge of third degree burglary, a D felony.
On Aug. 3 the following charges were dismissed by the court: one count of third degree burglary, a D felony; one count of fourth degree theft, a serious misdemeanor; one count of escape of misdemeanant, a serious misdemeanor; two counts of assault on a peace officer and others, serious misdemeanors; one count of fourth degree criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor; and three counts of interference with official acts, simple misdemeanors.
Long owes the state $1,536.04.
Long has a previous felony conviction in Appanoose County. In March of 1997 he was found guilty of second degree burglary, a C felony, and was sentenced to 10 years in state prison.
