Pella library asks patrons to trade food for fines

PELLA — When most people get a fine, there's a mechanism behind it to ensure payment. Fail to pay a parking ticket, and you might just have a warrant waiting for you next time you're pulled over.

Libraries don't have that option. So the Pella Public Library is hoping patrons will settle fines by helping the hungry.

During National Library Week (April 9-13, 2012) the library will accept non-perishable food items in exchange for overdue fines. One food item will equal $1 in fines; two food items equal $2, etc.; up to a one-time maximum of $5.  Donations will be given to the Food Shelf.

Take three extra days to get through "The Hunger Games?" Take care of the fine by bringing in three cans of soup.

Only non-perishable canned goods and packaged items can be accepted.  All donated items must be in their original containers, unopened, undamaged, and not expired according to the package expiration date.
