APPANOOSE COUNTY —
A Mystic woman has collected multiple charges, including attempted murder, following a car chase on Highway 5 near Cincinnati late Wednesday night.
Crystal Renea Agan, 28, of Mystic, was charged with attempted murder, a class B felony; two counts of neglect of a dependent person, a class C felony; and operating while intoxicated (second offense), an aggravated misdemeanor, after being arrested following a crash to end a high-speed pursuit.
At approximately 11:46 p.m., the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office was performing a felony investigation at the 27000 block of Highway 5 when Agan approached the scene without a right front tire. Officers working the scene of the investigation attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Agan failed to yield to the officers and began to travel “in a reckless manner and without any regard for the safety of others,” a press release from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Department said.
The press release continued to say Agan attempted to strike officers’ vehicles during the pursuit, intentionally striking the rear of one of the officer’s cars and attempting to wreck the officer.
Pursuing officers executed a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle, in which Agan lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch at the intersection of Highway 5 and 584th Street on the west edge of Cincinnati.
When the officers approached the crashed vehicle, they discovered two occupants, aged 5 and 6 years old, inside the vehicle with Agan. The5- and 6-year-old children were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, where they would be examined and released. The identities of the children have not been released.
In the state of Iowa, a class B felony is punishable by a maximum prison term of 25 years. Class C felonies can be punishable by up to 10 years and a fine from $1,000-$10,000 for each offense. Aggravated misdemeanors carry a prison term of up to two years and a fine of $500-$5,000.
Agan is currently in custody, without bond, and is awaiting an initial court appearance.
