County and state fairs are always well-known for their fun and sometimes bizarre food offerings. Chefs seem to try and add "fried" or "on a stick" to any kind of food they can get their utensils on.
This year's Appanoose County Fair will feature a food competition, and even though the focus isn't about food "fried" or "on a stick," organizers hope it will inspire local chefs to create a new Appanoose County sandwich, or maybe several.
The Chaldea Chuckwagon Sandwich competition will be held Thursday, July 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the 4-H building on the Appanoose County Fair Grounds. According to organizer Justine Heffron, 20 invitations were sent out to restaurants and delis around Appanoose County and six have signed on to participate. There are no restrictions on ingredients and the sandwiches created may be hot or cold. The participants are: Honey Creek Resort, Louie's Lakeside Bistro and BBQ, The Continental, Tangleberries, Double R and Lazy Toad's BBQ.
The restaurants will each create a unique sandwich for the competition to be presented to the three guest judges and the public. The judges will be Neil MacArthur, Beverly Jordan and Mike Bogle. Mike O'Connor will provide commentary. Audience members who pay $1 may try a sample of each sandwich and cast a vote for their favorite. Voting will last for one hour and the judges will take the audience votes into account when choosing a winner.
On top of the $1 voting fee, the organizers said each sandwich maker may try to sway the audience to try and "bribe" the judges by making additional donations to their favorite sandwich, all in good fun and to raise more money. The sandwich that raises the most money will get the honorary title of the Chaldea Charity Sandwich, while the winner will get the exclusive right to call their creation the Chaldea Chuckwagon Sandwich. Money raised will benefit the BOB group.
The idea originally came from one of the groups formed out of the 10-10-10 project that was focused on marketing ideas for Appanoose County. The group consisted of Vicki Spurgeon, Rhonda Raskie, Pat McAfee, Steve Kozak, Jean Kozak and later, Heffron. The idea to incorporate Chaldea into the competition came from a desire to promote local history. Chaldea was the original name of Centerville. Organizers hope for a large turnout to mark the creation of a new local "landmark" sandwich.
