OTTUMWA —
Drought conditions worsened in Iowa over the last week, according to a new report from the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Two-thirds of the state is now experiencing extreme drought, according to this week's report. That's up from 62 percent last week and 58 percent two weeks ago. Most of the expansion took place in southeast and south-central Iowa.
Extreme drought now claims all of Davis, Appanoose and Monroe counties and almost all of Wapello County. It has crept into southwestern Marion County in the past week and covers all but the northeastern corner of Van Buren County.
Of counties in the CNHI coverage area, only Mahaska and Keokuk counties are free of extreme drought conditions, though each are in severe drought.
The only good news for Iowa is that the exceptional drought conditions did not expand beyond a small corner in northwest Iowa.
