Northstar students mark Patriot Day

Knoxville — Students in at least two classes at Northstar Elementary took time today to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. However, today's elementary students do not have firsthand memories of that day.

In Katie Davis' fourth grade class, the students colored squares to make a patriotic "quilt." The quilt now hangs in the hallway. They also discussed the historical significance of Sept. 11.

Dan Fay's fifth grade students' social studies lesson focused on Patriot Day today. Fay opened the discussion by sharing how history happens every day, but some stick out more than others because of the way they shape the world around around us. When polled, most of the students said they've had discussions with their families about the terrorist attacks.

Fay said this is the class in which the students were not born or were too small to have any firsthand memory of the attacks. In years past, students could remember what they were doing that day.

He shared with his students what he was doing, and the students were given the opportunity to ask questions or share what they knew about the attacks. Fay shared more facts about the day and read the students a book, written by kids who were their own age, called "September 12."
