OTTUMWA —
Wapello County residents who need emergency help will find their calls being routed through Mahaska County, at least for a little while.
The Ottumwa Police Department says the law enforcement center, which houses the county's 9-1-1 operations, lost the ability to receive emergency calls Sunday night. The calls are being re-routed, with the information forwarded to Wapello County.
Repairs to the county's system are needed, though it was not immediately known how long those would take. Non-emergency calls to the Wapello County center are unaffected.

On the evening of March 10, 2013, the Ottumwa Police Department and Wapello County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center lost the ability to receive 911 telephone calls. The inability to answer the 911 calls was caused by an air conditioning unit malfunction which damaged the telephone equipment. All 911 calls were rerouted to the Mahaska County 911 Center in Oskaloosa.
Until repairs are made to the equipment, all 911 calls coming into the Ottumwa Police Department and Wapello County Sheriff’s Office will be rerouted to the Mahaska County 911 Center. When the Mahaska County 911 Center receives a 911 call from the Ottumwa or Wapello County area, the information is forwarded to the dispatch center at the Wapello County Law Enforcement Center.
Both the Ottumwa Police Department and the Wapello County Sheriff’s non-emergency lines are functional.
